Music Videos - Issues and Debates

Some questions...

1. Are music file sharers criminals? Does this mean that if you share your physical cds with your friends you're a criminal?

2. Whilst the internet allows bands to bypass the major companies, who acts as the 'gatekeeper'? How do you stop the 'dross'?

3. If anyone can post their music...how do you find the 'good stuff'?

4. How do you think Music Industry companies are harnessing the power of the internet? How has the industry learnt to see the internet as a 'friend' rather than a 'foe'?

Here we go then...the start to Music Video

You will have been analysing music videos in class and you should be beginning to see how music videos differ in their construction, conventions and style from other moving images texts. Work that you have covered will have documents on scribd's media monkey account for you to download and refer to.

The focus this week aside of beginning analysis of the videos is the way music is marketed and promoted. To start with you will be researching an artist or band of your choice and creating two aspects to your blog -
1. In what ways can your band/any band (or artist) market themselves - create a bullet point list
2. Choose two ways that your band/artist has used and blog the details - cover the method, why you think they choose, it, how it works and evaluate it - how effective do you think it is? Remember to use links, extracts and images to exemplify your work.

Initially, do this work in WORD, deposit it in the drop Box on the media server and then copy and paste into Blogger - we'll do this next week.

For now, just get your word document done and it's due for first lesson next week, either Mon 4th or Tues 5th October.

Any questions, email Mrs T asap - don't leave it - that means you DAN!! (Ha ha)

Plagiarism

PLAGIARISM

The rules on plagiarism of coursework are quite clear; anyone found guilty of plagiarising anyone else's work will be disqualified from entry to this unit by the school. The exam board will be informed of our decision, and are likely to uphold it.

This ruling relates to all work entered as coursework including research, planning, ideas, notes etc on your blog.

Definition of plagiarism: passing off someone else's work as your own, including work that has been altered to make it look as if it is yours. This could include the work belonging to someone else at West Hatch in your group, class, year group, or another year group. It could also include the work of a student from another school, or a media analyst who publishes their work in any format.

BE WARNED!!! There will be no 2nd chances when it comes to proven plagiarism. Thanks to N Blackborow for this :-)
