Final Week of term...

What you need to do is ensure you have done the following:

1. Get your pitch for your video approved
2. Complete your storyboards for the video
3. Shoot 1 min of you talking in groups/working at the computer or some other such study process in the class and get it up on your group blog
4. Make sure we have linked your GROUP blog to the main page!

These MUST BE READY so we can start filming the FIRST week back in JANUARY!

As a secondary issue, you need to do the following, bearing in mind you can do some of this at home but points 1 and 2 you need to do in groups in school:
5. Blogged everything - see the checkpoints on here
6. Read through the purple booklet over the holidays

7. You MUST read the guide on completion - it's on the blog - you have NOT been given a paper copy...

Monday 6 December 2010

Urgent to do this week (6th Dec) and what to write about your Lipsync

So FIRSTLY

Finish your lipsync asap. If you've only got 50 secs done, that's enough - the point is to learn the editing program and learn about the processes involved in making a music video.

For your BLOG, you need to post your response to these two outcomes:
1. What did you learn about editing and how did you feel about it?
2. What do you now know about lipsync-ing that you will use to help you complete your real music video?

This is REFLECTIVE and EVALUATIVE - what did you learn? How did you feel? How has it altered your understanding? and practice? Was it good? Was it effective in teaching you something? If not, why not?

SECONDLY

You MUST get your initial idea approved by submitting a TREATMENT to Miss - it can be the lyrics with rough ideas of what will happen where and a short presentation to miss OR it can be a proper treatment - like those in your packs!

You MUST be storyboarded and have all your shooting plans and schedules ready by the end of this term - there's only THIS week and NEXT week - a max of 8 lessons so GET A MOVE ON GUYS!

After/During Lipsync - what to Blog

What you need to do during or after your lipsync edit and BEFORE you move on, is to blog the following:
  1. How did you feel about the editing programme and learning to use it?
  2. What did you learn about making music videos from this exercise and...
  3. How will what you have learnt affect how you approach you proper production?

On your group blog you should put your answers BUT obviously there will be your personal responses as well as your group response so make sure you write something on BOTH BLOGS.

Star Image Collage

This week, your assignment is to generate a collage of a star's image.
Use both pictures and text to create a very interesting and informative collage.
You can use cut/paste or the computer (photoshop) as tools to help you with this task.
Do not forget what we discussed about star image in lessons. Make reference to various ideas/theories.
This assignment should be posted on your blog by next lesson. If you have done it on paper, you can scan and post it up.

IMPORTANT - What you MUST do by the end of this week (12/11)

1. You must have come up with an idea for your production company name and set up a blog in its name - the blog must have a separate email and log in that EVERYONE in your group knows - and tell ME so I can link it to the blog!

2. You must START the Lipsync activity - choose a song you know ALL the words to - make sure you use the same music file to sing to as you can use to import into the editing programme (If they're not the same by even a fraction, you'll never get your sync right!!)

3. You MUST be presenting your TREATMENT to me - this is a brief outline of how your music video will look - it should be a few paragraphs. You CANNOT go ahead without this approval. There are exemplar treatments in your teaching pack.

As a reminder, you are supposed to be filming and have edited a basic rough cut by Christmas - that is THREE school weeks away, only 12 lessons - in other words, you must
GET A MOVE ON!

5. Some of your own music videos you like and why with some SHORT analyses
6. Some work on your group discussions so far - name of production company and first ideas
7. Album Art - some discussion of album covers at least 3, showing conventions

A good way to avoid poor song choices and making crap decisions...

is to watch lots of other STUDENT music videos - you'll get an idea of what you can achieve and what works and doesn't work with the kind of resources you will have.

I promise you this is worth doing.

Try the following youtube channels - they're schools with lots of students and a good reputation but bear in mind their students will have a range of ability just like you do so they're not all amazing/there's no excuse!

1. Longroadmedia
2. Latymermedia
3. Hurtwood House Media

Enjoy. Get as many ideas as you can :-)

START PLANNING!

We will be doing the lipsync exercise which leads directly into your learning the editing programme (Final Cut Express).

You need to work in a small group - we will have 6 editing stations per class so the group size will be your class divided by 6 - you want as small a group as possible for this so you can get as much time on the editing as possible.

With your track choices for your real production you need to be coming up with your ideas and pitching them to me (mrs t) so I can approve them (it's about making sure you can get the best possible marks with your choices and plans rather than stopping you doing what you want!).

The stuff you need to plan is in your packs, purple worksheets booklet and on the blog here - see 'Completion Guide for Students' so it's in YOUR HANDS NOW!

You MUST be thinking and planning as groups - blogging research can be done in your own time, groups meetings, talking ideas through with me, shot planning as a group etc can't be done anytime!

Blackout - the film

Practical Paperwork

Here's a great example. This is from Year 10s on a Cineclub shoot. They did this in their spare time and for fun. However, it shows clear planning and development as they went along - plus it's not perfect which is what I have been saying - you need to show PROCESS and yet clear attention to detail - you need this level of detail and some but it shouldn't be perfect.

Example of Editing to the beat

Even though this is a trailer for a TV programme, it is a good example of editing to the beat - the beat in the song is a bit uneven so watch for changes in the pace of editing and even places where you'd EXPECT an edit but there isn't one!

What can you learn from this Music Video?

Making a good track choice

So what makes a good track choice for yr13 music video?

Well you need to demonstrate the following:
1. A variety of shot distances (framing)
2. A good control of editing - and editing to the BEAT
3. Great control of Mise-en-scene
4. A mixture of performance and narrative (not compulsory but best idea)
5. Accurate lipsyncing
6. A convincing Performance - we need to believe they're actually singing!
7. Direct Address
8. A focus on the artist - its is selling the product after all!
9. Different pace throughout your work - some slow parts, some fast parts!

In order to accommodate the above, your song choice is crucial. I'll post a music video above which did well as it was done by one person and the planning and evaluation were amazing but is weak in a few places: watch the boats keep emerging from the girl's head, the performance isn't convincing, there's little variety - it is basically very boring.

The problem here is the TRACK CHOICE! - Think carefully about the track you want to choose before pitching it to me - the track needs some pace but slow enough vocals for you to match...also don't pick your favourite song - you'll hate whatever you choose by the end of the assignment I can assure you!

I would also advise you NOT to choose something current and with an existing music video..that's not to say this is a hard and fast rule but be creative and spend some time thinking about this - SONG CHOICE CAN MAKE OR BREAK YOUR CHANCES OF SUCCESS so take some time and get it right.

In addition, you need to be thinking about creating a GROUP BLOG. This should be set up with a google mail account - choose something you can ALL remember and then give me the URL of your group blog so we can link them to the music video class blog.

Ideally you should have a song choice finalised by the first Weds after we come back - and I mean an AGREED WITH ME song choice!

Blogging your work so far!

1. So by now you should have begun to post quite a lot of the work you have been doing. Certainly you should have a link on the class blog to your individual blog - check on the left under your group name. If you're not on there - tell Mrs T

2. Your previous work should be up so when you researched your chosen artist on how they used the internet - that should be on your blog - see the post 4/10 what makes an effective blog for details.

3. You should have/will have this week your presentation that you did on how to market your fake band linked to your blog - you can go to the slideshare account (there's a post on the music video blog giving the username and password AND on there's a post on the main blog) and upload your presentation and then you embed it into your blog using the normal post function, only switch to 'html' which is next to 'compose', and then paste in the code.  We will have a 'how to embed' mini tutorial before half term.

4. Your work on analysing or comparing music videos should also be posted on your blog.

5. In addition, all the music videos you have been watching and sharing with each other during lessons should be linked to your individual blogs with a few words from you about why you like it, what inspires you, if there's anything you want to include in your own work etc etc underneath.

Basically, if you've done it this half term, you should make sure it's on your blog.

FINALLY - you must LABEL your posts - make sure we tell you how to do this before half term!!

SLIDESHARE - updated!

Logging in to Slideshare

In order to get access to your presentations to embed them and access them, you need to log into the slideshare account.

The Username is "westhatchmediastudies" and the password is Mrs T's surname followed by 1. This now works - I've changed it and checked it - no caps or gaps just my surname and then 1.

Email me directly if you can't access the account!

What is an effective blog?

This week (4/10/10) we're focusing on what makes an effective blog and setting your blogs up. There will be lessons on how to use the blogger software so you can do your own designs, upload videos and images and use gadgets effectively.

So your progress this week should include:

1. Completion of your music artist and their use of the internet (homework - watched video 'Changing Music Industry')
2. How to create, design and use your blog
3. What the content of your blogs should contain - listed on pages 63 and 64 in your pack.

Exemplar blogs will be linked and can be visited here:

and here's the one we showed in class:

Music Videos - Issues and Debates

Some questions...

1. Are music file sharers criminals? Does this mean that if you share your physical cds with your friends you're a criminal?

2. Whilst the internet allows bands to bypass the major companies, who acts as the 'gatekeeper'? How do you stop the 'dross'?

3. If anyone can post their music...how do you find the 'good stuff'?

4. How do you think Music Industry companies are harnessing the power of the internet? How has the industry learnt to see the internet as a 'friend' rather than a 'foe'?

Here we go then...the start to Music Video

You will have been analysing music videos in class and you should be beginning to see how music videos differ in their construction, conventions and style from other moving images texts. Work that you have covered will have documents on scribd's media monkey account for you to download and refer to.

The focus this week aside of beginning analysis of the videos is the way music is marketed and promoted. To start with you will be researching an artist or band of your choice and creating two aspects to your blog -
1. In what ways can your band/any band (or artist) market themselves - create a bullet point list
2. Choose two ways that your band/artist has used and blog the details - cover the method, why you think they choose, it, how it works and evaluate it - how effective do you think it is? Remember to use links, extracts and images to exemplify your work.

Initially, do this work in WORD, deposit it in the drop Box on the media server and then copy and paste into Blogger - we'll do this next week.

For now, just get your word document done and it's due for first lesson next week, either Mon 4th or Tues 5th October.

Any questions, email Mrs T asap - don't leave it - that means you DAN!! (Ha ha)

Plagiarism

PLAGIARISM

The rules on plagiarism of coursework are quite clear; anyone found guilty of plagiarising anyone else's work will be disqualified from entry to this unit by the school. The exam board will be informed of our decision, and are likely to uphold it.

This ruling relates to all work entered as coursework including research, planning, ideas, notes etc on your blog.

Definition of plagiarism: passing off someone else's work as your own, including work that has been altered to make it look as if it is yours. This could include the work belonging to someone else at West Hatch in your group, class, year group, or another year group. It could also include the work of a student from another school, or a media analyst who publishes their work in any format.

BE WARNED!!! There will be no 2nd chances when it comes to proven plagiarism. Thanks to N Blackborow for this :-)
