Blackout - the film

Practical Paperwork

Here's a great example. This is from Year 10s on a Cineclub shoot. They did this in their spare time and for fun. However, it shows clear planning and development as they went along - plus it's not perfect which is what I have been saying - you need to show PROCESS and yet clear attention to detail - you need this level of detail and some but it shouldn't be perfect.

Example of Editing to the beat

Even though this is a trailer for a TV programme, it is a good example of editing to the beat - the beat in the song is a bit uneven so watch for changes in the pace of editing and even places where you'd EXPECT an edit but there isn't one!

What can you learn from this Music Video?

Making a good track choice

So what makes a good track choice for yr13 music video?

Well you need to demonstrate the following:
1. A variety of shot distances (framing)
2. A good control of editing - and editing to the BEAT
3. Great control of Mise-en-scene
4. A mixture of performance and narrative (not compulsory but best idea)
5. Accurate lipsyncing
6. A convincing Performance - we need to believe they're actually singing!
7. Direct Address
8. A focus on the artist - its is selling the product after all!
9. Different pace throughout your work - some slow parts, some fast parts!

In order to accommodate the above, your song choice is crucial. I'll post a music video above which did well as it was done by one person and the planning and evaluation were amazing but is weak in a few places: watch the boats keep emerging from the girl's head, the performance isn't convincing, there's little variety - it is basically very boring.

The problem here is the TRACK CHOICE! - Think carefully about the track you want to choose before pitching it to me - the track needs some pace but slow enough vocals for you to match...also don't pick your favourite song - you'll hate whatever you choose by the end of the assignment I can assure you!

I would also advise you NOT to choose something current and with an existing music video..that's not to say this is a hard and fast rule but be creative and spend some time thinking about this - SONG CHOICE CAN MAKE OR BREAK YOUR CHANCES OF SUCCESS so take some time and get it right.

In addition, you need to be thinking about creating a GROUP BLOG. This should be set up with a google mail account - choose something you can ALL remember and then give me the URL of your group blog so we can link them to the music video class blog.

Ideally you should have a song choice finalised by the first Weds after we come back - and I mean an AGREED WITH ME song choice!

Blogging your work so far!

1. So by now you should have begun to post quite a lot of the work you have been doing. Certainly you should have a link on the class blog to your individual blog - check on the left under your group name. If you're not on there - tell Mrs T

2. Your previous work should be up so when you researched your chosen artist on how they used the internet - that should be on your blog - see the post 4/10 what makes an effective blog for details.

3. You should have/will have this week your presentation that you did on how to market your fake band linked to your blog - you can go to the slideshare account (there's a post on the music video blog giving the username and password AND on there's a post on the main blog) and upload your presentation and then you embed it into your blog using the normal post function, only switch to 'html' which is next to 'compose', and then paste in the code.  We will have a 'how to embed' mini tutorial before half term.

4. Your work on analysing or comparing music videos should also be posted on your blog.

5. In addition, all the music videos you have been watching and sharing with each other during lessons should be linked to your individual blogs with a few words from you about why you like it, what inspires you, if there's anything you want to include in your own work etc etc underneath.

Basically, if you've done it this half term, you should make sure it's on your blog.

FINALLY - you must LABEL your posts - make sure we tell you how to do this before half term!!

SLIDESHARE - updated!

Logging in to Slideshare

In order to get access to your presentations to embed them and access them, you need to log into the slideshare account.

The Username is "westhatchmediastudies" and the password is Mrs T's surname followed by 1. This now works - I've changed it and checked it - no caps or gaps just my surname and then 1.

Email me directly if you can't access the account!

What is an effective blog?

This week (4/10/10) we're focusing on what makes an effective blog and setting your blogs up. There will be lessons on how to use the blogger software so you can do your own designs, upload videos and images and use gadgets effectively.

So your progress this week should include:

1. Completion of your music artist and their use of the internet (homework - watched video 'Changing Music Industry')
2. How to create, design and use your blog
3. What the content of your blogs should contain - listed on pages 63 and 64 in your pack.

Exemplar blogs will be linked and can be visited here:

and here's the one we showed in class:
